E Bike Conversion
E Bike conversion – do you have a bike that you love, but it’s getting to be hard work climbing those hills? If you don’t want to spend thousands on an electric bike, have you thought about converting your existing bike to electric? Mid drive conversion kits can be fitted for as little as £750 for the base kit (provided your bike is suitable, not all bikes are). You can then add extras like mudguards, rear pannier racks, lights that work from the display taking power from the bike battery and a few other things.
Due to the extra weight it is advisable to convert a bike that has disc brakes, or is suitable to convert to disc brakes (extra fees will apply).
You will then have a bike which has an assistance level of 80nm torque on the highest setting. To put that in context, the average person can probably manage to pedal at about 20nm if they are fit. Hills become a doddle 🙂
Is my bike suitable to convert?
To be suitable for conversion, a frame will have to meet certain criteria. The mid mount motor fits in the bottom bracket, which means that no cables can run under the bottom bracket. Because of this, frames with top tube (crossbar) cable routing are preferable, but not essential, as cables could be re-routed. There must be a clear space directly behind the bottom bracket, between the chain stays. This is where the motor bracket is secured and the cables that run from the motor have to pass through here. The lower bottle cage mount on the down tube should be at least 180mm from the bottom of the down tube where it meets the seat tube. This gives room to fit the battery, but you will also need sufficient clearance between the top tube and down tube. Some smaller framed or trapezoidal type frames may not have sufficient space here. This could be overcome by fitting a rack type battery on the rear however. Ideally, your frame should be compatible with disc brakes due to the extra weight when the conversion is added.
